News: Meet the Team – Debbie Sayers
March 08, 2021
We spoke with our newest member of our Administration team, Debbie Sayers, to get a bit more acquainted with her.
What was your first job & what led you to this career?
My first job was at a Duplicating company, this was before photocopiers were around and as such we produced copies of documents using duplicating machines. My job was in the Accounts Department, as assistant to the supervisor, and I left after 4 years to get married.
I was then offered a job at Edward Jones, a large US company who I would say are the American equivalent of St.James’s Place. Unfortunately, they pulled out of the UK, but I had stayed in touch with the adviser I worked for, who now worked for SJP, and he asked me to work with him.
After 4 years, I moved to an Independent Financial Adviser to get an overall view of independent and tied advisers. Following my move to Cornwall, I was lucky enough to secure a job with an SJP Partner in Truro and then St Ives, before joining Plus.
What’s your favourite way to unwind after a busy day?
My go to way to unwind has always been a long hot soak in the bath! I take the time to catch up with my daughter Becci and my son Robert on the phone and have a scroll on social media!
What’s your favourite sport to watch, and who do you support?
Growing up, my bedroom window overlooked White Hart Lane, Tottenham Hotspur’s old ground, and with my Dad being a Spurs fan, there wasn’t really much choice with who I was going to support.
I became more interested in football after meeting my ex-husband, who worked for Spurs for 40 years as Match day security for the Players’ Lounge.
I went regularly to watch the match with my son Robert, and my children would often end up in the Players’ Lounge having a kickabout with Teddy Sheringham or Gary Mabbutt and their children!
Years ago, we lived round the corner from another Tottenham player, midfielder David Howells, and one day Robert, then aged 7, took it upon himself to knock at David’s, and ask him if he’d like to play football in the park!
Robert recently found David on Facebook, and sent him a message asking if he remembered him from that time, to which he replied that he did and they are now Facebook friends!
What’s one hobby you’d love to get into?
One of my hobbies in the past has been darts, I used to play pairs with a friend and we played in the ETE Ladies Darts League. One of our proudest moments was getting through to the final in 1977!!
Nowadays, I would really love to learn how to properly play golf. I have tried to play and found that I am able to throw the golf club further than I can hit the ball!
