News: Life as a Virtual PA – the anything & everything approach
August 25, 2020
SJP Experienced Administrator, Jane Wright provides us with insight in to her life as a Virtual PA working exclusively for SJP Partners & Advisers.
Having been used to only working side by side with one Adviser in previous roles, taking on the challenge of becoming a Virtual PA working for several Advisers at any one time took a bit of getting used to.
I now had to get used to several different ways of working to accommodate each person & their clients and soon learned if you are not organised, flexible & willing to take on almost any task thrown at you, this job is not for you!!
As well as the more standard tasks expected of St.James’s Place Administrators such as updating client records on iBusiness, dealing with queries to the Admin Centre, and producing and submitting business via EBS, my skills have been called on for a wide variety of tasks.
Over the years, these have included organising sponsorship of a Partner’s local Cricket Club when he became Captain, helping with PowerPoint presentations to generate business & being there for clients in times of need, such as bereavement, when they may feel lost & confused.
I find the main difficulty with this role, is conveying to new Partners how we can foster relationships with them and potentially their clients when on most occasions, we will never be in the same office together!
In my experience, the relationship is based on trust, and those Partners who allow me to use my initiative, give insights into what I think will help them, or how problems can be solved, will be the ones who get the most from our service.
I also think personality comes into it & if you are someone who has a natural affinity with clients, it comes across even over the phone or on email, and the clients will respond to this.
I have clients who come directly to me for help as we have been able to develop our relationship over time, meaning that the Partners are left to do what they do best & give advice, while I take the lead on the more day to day tasks and requests where possible.
Life as a Virtual PA can be tricky at times, you can feel pulled in many different directions but it can also be rewarding when you know you’ve kept everyone happy for another day!
